AI agent vs chatbot: what is the difference and which do you need?

A clear comparison of AI agents and chatbots, what each is good for, and which one your business actually needs.

The terms get mixed up constantly, but a chatbot and an AI agent do different jobs. Knowing the difference saves you from buying the wrong thing.

What a chatbot does

A chatbot answers questions in a chat window, usually on your website. It is good at common questions like hours, service areas or pricing basics. Most of the time it stops at the conversation: it talks, but it does not do anything in your other systems.

What an AI agent does

An AI agent completes a task. It can read an incoming call, text or form, decide what the customer needs, take action such as creating a CRM record, booking an appointment or sending a quote, and follow up later. It works across channels and plugs into your tools.

A simple way to choose

  • If you only need website visitors to get quick answers, a chatbot can be enough.
  • If you want leads booked, quotes sent and follow-ups done without anyone doing the work, you need an agent.

Why custom matters

An agent is only as good as what it knows about your business: your pricing, your service area, your rules and your tone. A generic agent guesses. A custom-built agent is built around how you actually operate, so it sounds like you and stays inside the limits you set.
